The New Melon - October 6th, 2008

The New Melon Trailer from The Melon on Vimeo.

That's right, on October 6th, 2008 The Melon will be unveiling its new and improved website interface. Not only are we proud to bring you a whole new look, but we're pleased to present an enhanced interface and new and innovative features. Let's just say The NEW Melon can only be described as "b'dass."

In order to switch over to our new site, The Melon will be shutting down on Saturday, October 4th before re-launching on October 6th. We'll be posting right up until Saturday so keep stopping by for up-to-date coverage.

On October 6th, taste a whole new Melon.

Live-Blogging the VP Debate

bidenpalen.jpg SuperElectric.jpg
Shark + Barracuda + Electricity = Fish Sticks

This Thursday, for the first time in the history of the universe, The Melon's Electric Elliot will be live-blogging the Vice-Presidential debate. Who's winning? Who's losing? Can one really win a lose a debate with this magnitude of pandering? One thing is for sure, with Electric Elliot at the helm (yes, I'm speaking in 3rd person) everyone will be burned.

Join me at 6pm PST and for an hour and a half of pure verbal murder on these Veep hopefuls. Who came up with Veep anyway? Isn't VP abbreviated enough? F*cking media idiots!

Holy crap! It's our birthday!

MelonPoster1_-221x347.jpgIt wasn't until Chris reminded me to check, but as it turns out, today (September 22nd) is The Melon's 1 yr. birthday. Although The Melon Online didn't launch until January 17th, 2008, our first radio show and the true beginning of The Melon occurred one year ago today in a small Tacoma based radio station known as 90.1FM KUPS Tacoma.

To commemorate this astonishing achievement The Melon is excited to announce our official launch date for the new website. Come October 6th, you'll be able to experience and taste The Melon in a whole new dimension.

So, in honor of our first birthday, let's take a journey down memory lane and listen to the first ever Melon recording. I give you: Melon Radio - Episode 1.

The Melon Interviews: Life of Elle

In our sponsorship of the 22nd Frost Park Chalk Offs, The Melon vowed to film an exclusive interview with the winner. That sunny Friday, when the chalk-dust cleared, one woman stood strong. A woman who only needs a monosyllabic name and paintbrush power to claim victory.

The Melon proudly presents our exclusive interview with the 22nd Best Artist in the Universe of Tacoma, Lisa "Elle" Lindholm.

The Melon's School Board Coverage Featured in TNT

It seems The Melon has ended up in the TNT blogosphere for the second time (the first time in a article by Mark Briggs.) This time, education reporter Kris Sherman discusses our coverage of the Tacoma School Board Meetings, taking quotes from our own education activist Chris "The Wedge" Van Vechten. The TNT goes on to talk a bit about our good friend Robert "The Traveller" Hill.

School board caught on tape

You can see the TV-shy Tacoma School Board on the Internet now, thanks to Chris Van Vechten and friends at the Melon Online Web site.

He sent me an e-mail this morning, referencing a story I wrote recently on the School Board nixing the idea of televising their meetings. (The Tacoma City Council and lots of other local electeds appear on the tube when they meet.)

"After reading your article, my friends and I decided to take action," Van Vechten wrote to me today. Attached was a link to The Melon, which carries the headline "Ripe! Tacoma School Board Meeting 8/28/08.”

9/11: Generation To Generation

After writing and showing my narrative to my dad, he decided to contribute a piece as well. Below you'll find my piece, followed by my father's.

When the first plane hit I was struggling with an Advanced Geometry test. Our principal, Mr. Lorenz, announced over the intercom that a plane had hit the World Trade Center. A sophomore in high school, I didn’t really understanding the significance of that first plane, and my teacher insisting that we finish our test without turning on the TV to watch the day unfold, added to my suspicion that a plane hitting the World Trade Center wasn’t significant.

It wasn’t until after failing my test and seeing the images of a smoking tower on the classroom television of my second period history class did I realize that something more important was going on. There wasn’t much discussion as Mr. Richied’s students started to fill their seats, eyes wide on the live footage of blackness billowing out of one of the twin towers. It was apparent our planned history lesson would be forgone for the day, as history was in the making.
